Chapter 11

Ana wakes up, quietly pulling away from a sleeping Kara. She goes into the closet and gets dressed, wondering how Bela and Joph are doing. Kara is setting up breakfast when Ana walks out.

“After we eat, we’re seeing Bela,” Ana says flatly.

Kara looks at her for a moment but says nothing. Evren joins them, and they eat together quickly before Kara escorts Ana to Bela and Joph’s quarters.

Along the way, Kara tries a few times to start a conversation, but gets no response from Ana apart from quiet mumbles of acknowledgment. Kara knocks when they arrive at Bela’s quarters.

Joph opens the door. “Please, come in. Bela, we have royal company.”

Bela steps out of the closet as they enter the room. He walks up to Ana and bows. “Majesty.”

“Count.” They look at each other for a moment before she pulls him in for a hug. “I’m so grateful we got you both out.”

“I am, too,” he says, stepping back. “I am forever in your debt.”

“We are going to get the council. They are all traitors for working with Kane. You will regain your position, then you and I will work together to save your people. I give you my word.”

“For the first time in a long time, I have hope. Thank you, mi’lady.”

“Are your quarters to your liking? Do you need anything?”

“Our quarters are perfect, and we have everything we need. Thank you for your hospitality.”

Joph steps forward. “With your permission, I would like to see your Medical Center. As you have seen, our technology is more advanced than yours. If we are to work together in the future, it would be advantageous for us both if I can help update it.”

“Of course, that will be fine. I’ll let Winslow know. He runs the center, and I’m sure he’ll be grateful for any help.”

Kara smiles at her, realizing this may be the distraction she needs. “I’ll fetch him now so you all can talk.”

Ana watches her leave then notices Joph is studying her intensely. “Joph, is everything all right?”

“Apologies, mi’lady. I am worried about you. You are rather pale.”

She gives him a small smile. “I’m fine. A little tired.”

While they wait for Kara to return with Winslow, they discuss the technology Joph has been developing recently. Winslow and Kara enter and join the conversation just as Joph is explaining how this new technology could be implemented in Maristellar, and what it could do for the people here. Once he’s finished, Winslow shakes his hand.

“We are grateful for any help.”

“Always,” Ana says to Joph. Bela takes her hand.

“Majesty, take it easy today. You’ve earned it.”

“Yes, Bela. Please, let us know if you need anything.”

Bela and Joph bow. “Thank you,” Bela says.

Ana and Winslow step out into the corridor together. “Mi’lady, if I may? Please, take this as medical opinion and not an insult. You look… weary. You need rest. Will you do that today?”

“If I can. You know the duties and responsibilities I have.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Heading back to their quarters, Kara looks her over.
